Planning a landscape lighting system
Most residential landscape lighting runs on a 12-volt low-voltage system: a transformer plugs into an outdoor outlet and feeds the fixtures. Start with the jobs you need done: safe paths and steps, a lit entry, then accents on trees and the house.
- Path lights: about 6 to 8 ft apart, staggered rather than in a runway line.
- Spot lights: aim up into trees or across stone to show texture.
- Choose fixtures rated for wet locations; solid brass and copper hold up well to humidity.
- 2700K to 3000K warm white keeps the yard inviting.
Is low-voltage landscape lighting safe?
Yes. 12-volt systems are low risk to work around, and the transformer is the only part that connects to line voltage.
How far apart should path lights be?
About 6 to 8 ft apart, depending on the fixture's spread and how bright you want the path.
