Chandelier or pendant?

A chandelier is the centerpiece of a room, usually over a dining table or in a foyer. A pendant is a single hanging light, often used in a row over an island or counter. A linear suspension spreads light along a long table or island with one fixture.

Sizing and hanging height

  • Dining table: pick a chandelier about half to two-thirds the width of the table and hang the bottom 30 to 36 in above the tabletop.
  • Kitchen island: hang pendants 30 to 36 in above the counter, spaced about 24 to 30 in apart and at least 6 in in from each end.
  • Foyer: keep at least 7 ft of clearance below the fixture; in a two-story entry, hang it roughly level with the second-floor window.

How big should a dining room chandelier be?

A common rule is half to two-thirds the width of the table. Another quick check is to add the room's length and width in feet; the total is a good diameter in inches.

How many pendants go over a kitchen island?

Two pendants suit most islands up to about 6 ft; three work for longer islands. Leave 24 to 30 in between them.
